50 productive tasks you can do during downtime in your music therapy business

Your Online Presence & Tech Pieces

  1. Update your website (take an audit and make sure all pages have correct information + updated messaging)
  2. Update your printed marketing materials (brochures, flyers, rack cards, handouts, etc.)
  3. Update your business cards (do you know that you can design your own on Canva.com?)
  4. Update cover photos/headers on all of your social media accounts
  5. Make sure all of your contact info is up-to-date on your social media accounts
  6. Start a blog for your website
  7. Put together an editorial calendar for your blog & batch write blog posts
  8. Put together your online marketing calendar for the next quarter
  9. Plan out, batch, and schedule your social media for the next month
  10. Make sure a backup of your website is made at least weekly
  11. Make sure a backup of your Google Drive is made frequently
  12. Make sure to backup your computers, laptops, and devices (make sure they are properly updated, as well)

Planning

  1. Put together details for additional services and offerings for the summer and beyond
  2. Research grants and scholarships
  3. Look at upcoming health fairs, opportunities, conferences, and presentations so that you can market your business with your community

Innovative Income

  1. Buy the e-book or course Innovative Income for Music Therapists by Rachel Rambach
  2. Create an e-book or downloadable resource for your audience (and sell it!)
  3. Create songs and leadsheets for your audience (and sell them!)

Systems & Materials

  1. Balance your accounts and financials
  2. Check on your referral systems — make sure they are working for your needs
  3. Work on your company/business systems and workflows
  4. Instruments and materials inventory (and disinfecting/cleaning)
  5. Replace guitar strings, tune instruments (Autoharp, anyone?), change batteries
  6. Update your song inventory
  7. Create new playlists in Spotify
  8. Learn a new song that you’ve been meaning to learn
  9. Prepare visual aids (and laminate!)
  10. Make a list of office supplies and other materials that you need (bonus step: create a wish list so that others could gift you!)

Learn & Share Your Expertise

  1. Listen to a new podcast (my favorite entertainment one is The Office Ladies; my favorite biz one is Online Marketing Made Easy by Amy Porterfield)
  2. Write a session proposal for the 2020 AMTA Conference
  3. Watch a TedTalk (watch Music, Bonding & Flowing — Improvising Our Way There by music therapist Ed Roth)
  4. Take an online continuing education course (or two!)
  5. Update your CBMT credits online
  6. Download the latest Code of Ethics from AMTA
  7. Read the latest Journal of Music Therapy and Music Therapy Perspectives
  8. Write new songs (and share them!)
  9. Share live or pre-recorded music over social media (Facebook Live, Instagram Live, YouTube) so that your audience can listen and interact with you at home
  10. Learn a new skill (embroidery, writing, macrame, etc.)

Personal & Self Care

You cannot pour from an empty cup. Taking time for self care IMPROVES your business.

  1. Unplug and read a book (my fave fiction is anything by Jane Austen; my favorite non-fiction is Building a StoryBrand by Donald Miller)
  2. Complete your census online – https://my2020census.gov
  3. Netflix/Hulu/Disney+ it up
  4. Stop scrolling through social media and turn off your phone
  5. Skype/Facetime with friends and family who are far away
  6. Do some yoga, stretch, jumping jacks
  7. Take some mindful breaths or meditate
  8. Take a walk outside
  9. Journal
  10. Get crafty
  11. Sing the Hamilton Original Broadway Cast Recording at the top of your lungs (oh, that’s just me?)
  12. Watch cat, puppy, hedgehog, giraffe, hippo, penguin, eagle live cams and videos (my fave is April the Giraffe)
